Tākina recognised at the World Architects 'Building of the Year' awards

We’re thrilled to share that Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre has been named a highly respected runner-up in the World-Architects ‘Building of the Year’ awards.

Willis Bond were proud to play a part in helping to bring this project to life alongside the Wellington City Council, as their chosen Development Partner.

From a global shortlist of 40 outstanding buildings, Tākina was the only New Zealand project to make the cut—securing 21% of the public vote and finishing in an honourable second place. This international recognition is a testament to the strength of local design and innovation.

Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture, Tākina’s striking form draws inspiration from Wellington’s maritime setting, dramatic weather patterns, and cultural narratives, including Te Upoko o Te Ika—the head of the great fish of Māui. Built with sustainability at its core, the convention centre enhances the cityscape while reducing environmental impact.

Studio Pacific’s Daryl Calder says the recognition highlights the collaborative effort that brought Tākina to life:

“This landmark reflects Wellington’s creative spirit, forward-thinking vision, and deep cultural connections, enriched by the guidance of mana whenua.”

Project Director Stephen McDougall adds that Tākina’s design is both practical and innovative, with sustainability at the forefront:

“We are grateful for the trust that Wellington City Council and Willis Bond placed in us. Tākina is a building designed not just to serve a purpose, but to enhance Wellington as a global events destination.”

Since opening, Tākina has already made a significant impact on Wellington’s economy, attracting major conferences and exhibitions. WellingtonNZ’s David Perks highlights its contribution:

“Tākina is generating more than 80,000 additional visitor nights per year and over $40 million in extra spending for the city.”

Unlike traditional convention centres, Tākina is a space the public can enjoy, with exhibitions, a Visitor Information Centre, and Zephyr Café adding to the experience.

Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau acknowledges this achievement as a major milestone for the city:

“We are absolutely thrilled. Tākina is an iconic structure that will continue to attract visitors and exhibitions from around the world.”

Following its feature as World-Architects ‘Building of the Week’, Tākina’s inclusion in the ‘Building of the Year’ shortlist—and its strong public support—reinforces its status as an architectural icon.

We’re incredibly proud to have played a role in this project and look forward to seeing Tākina continue to shape Wellington’s future as a world-class destination.
