Tauranga's civic regeneration project takes next step forward
The plans for Tauranga’s new master planned civic precinct - Te Manawataki O Te Papa - have taken another major step forward, with the project now approved to be delivered as a single-stage phased development, and initial demolition works now underway.
Following extensive community engagement, the Commission for the council has approved the $303.4 million project, which will deliver new facilities including a civic whare (public meeting house), library, museum, and exhibition and events centre over the next eight years.
Demolition of the council’s now-vacant Willow Street site is now underway in readiness to make space for the first phase of the project.
Te Manawataki O Te Papa is a partnership project between Tauranga City Council and Willis Bond.
Willis Bond has entered into a 12-year partnering agreement with Tauranga City Council to deliver the Te Manawataki O Te Papa master plan, and includes the delivery of New Zealand’s largest mass timber office building, 90 Devonport Road.
